Growing up, Guy spent the majority of his free time in sports, including ice hockey (though “retiring” from the competitive levels at the age of 15), earning a black belt in traditional Tae Kwon Do and dabbling with skiing, soccer and one year of high school football. He continued to be active through university, playing intramural hockey, weight training and earning a senior belt in Wing Chun Kung Fu, while at the same time working as a teacher, counselor and director at an outdoor school/recreational summer camp just outside of Banff, Alberta.

On graduating (with a brief year’s respite in the middle to travel through South East Asia), Guy moved out to Vancouver and took full advantage of the lifestyle the West Coast affords while working as a counselor to youth at risk. After four years, he felt it was time to move on from working with kids, and decided to try to combine both his passion for sport and activity with the coaching skills learned in counseling. In 2001 he earned his ACE personal training certification and began working as a personal trainer. In 2007 he earned his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification through the NSCA, before further adding on his StrongFirst Level One kettlebell certification (2012), NCCP Olympic Weightlifting Level One (2015), and certifications in the Functional Movement Screening, TRX (Personal and Group Instructor), and Power Plate.

Seeing an opportunity to help with the direction of fitness education in western Canad, in 2014 Guy took a spot on the NSCA Advisory Board for British Columbia.

Guy currently continues to enjoy trail racing – both on the bike and on foot – as well as playing at various competitive levels of Ball Hockey as a goalie.
